Being organised and thinking about all the 'what ifs' of a journey makes it difficult though. I do keep referring back to my belief that the only things you need in life are food, water and somewhere safe to sleep. Everything else being a bonus!
To keep costs down, I will be using stuff I already have. I have a lot of outdoor kit from years of hill walking, mountain biking, camping, adventure racing etc. The only things I will buy for this trip, are a few items to make life on the road a bit more comfortable.
Things purchased are:
-Pannier rack. Quick release seat post mounted. Avenir Pioneer Urban.
-Pannier bags. Includes 2side bags and top compartment in one. Ultimate Hardware Triple Pannier 28litre.
-Ergonomic grips. Include small bar ends for comfort and a range of hand positions. Velo Attune Triple Density Lock On.
-Tyres. Change the tyres on my mountain bike for smoother Schwalbe Road Cruiser tyres.
- Bar Bags: Handlebar bag and top tube bag from Roswheel
Bike: Giant Anthem - Full suspension mountain bike, not the most practical bike to do a long distance tour on, but it's all I have. Both front and rear suspension lock out, so that'll be helpful.
Tools: Minimum amount of tools to keep me rolling to the next bike shop, if required! Over many years of mountain biking, apart from a few punctures, generally I haven't had many major bike breakages. With this trip I reckon most will be on tarmac or gravel roads or paths, so there's less chance of anything major going wrong with the bike...hopefully!!
