The Rock Phones the Rule! - Day 31
Monday 29th September 2014 - Breakfast was ming. Spongy bread, set natural yogurt, cereal was nice though.
Got to get out of this hostel, asap.
Better go and see Strasbourg I suppose since I'm here. Have to go back through that way to get back onto canal. Some kind of march going on in town. Watch them walk past.
Go into tourist info centre, she didn't have much info on the cycle route I'd be taking.
Found McDonald's on way out of town. Stopped.
Food, WiFi, phone call. Soaking up the hot sun.
Had a great chat with my mucker Andrea, so it was actually a little perk me up and a boost for the rest of the day. 2.30pm and 60km to do.
We then cycled together for half an hour or so, before her son came home from school!
Followed a rather portly gentleman on a road bike for the next 15km, good as a wind breaker.
An hour or so later it started clouding over & became quite muggy. The canal was nice now, through the trees, but it was straight and never ending and all looked the same.
There have been lots of fisherman the last few days along the canals. Not seen any of them catch anything, but about 5 or 6 times fish have jumped out of the water as I've gone past and near given me heart failure. They're massive silvery fish.
Passed a bike fix it point with lots of tools. If I knew what was wrong and how to fix it, it would've been pretty handy!
Loads of bunkers as well I kept passing, must be on, or near the border.
Also, the thing with cycling beside water the last few days, are the amount of flies. Slightly bigger than midgies, but smaller than May flies. They get everywhere. In my eyes, up my nose, in my ears, down my top, in my hair. Free protein snacks though I guess!
Stopped off at Sundhouse to get some food supplies. Pretty cool looking houses, all multicoloured and had wooden beams on the front and shutters.
Tin of tuna, bacon tuc crackers, chocolate biscuits and some cereal bars. Can feel how stuffy it is when I went into the supermarket, it was like walking into a giant chiller. It was nice.
Passed a sewage works. Major boke. Open air and hot weather. I whiffed it quite a bit before I got to it, with the wind blowing it to me. Going past it I was gagging, it was retched and so strong it was catching in my throat. Quick, pedal faster faster, get away from here!
Getting closer to Neuf Brisach, took me into the countryside. All around farmers where out collecting the corn. They then poured them all into tall steel cages. Looked class, not sure how they got them out again through.
Through a pink town. Pink houses, pink walls, pink road. Quite bizarre. It had a pizza van. I really really wanted to stop, but the black clouds were looming and a spit of rain was on. Only 8km to go, pedal pedal pedal.
Arrived at Neuf Brisach camping. Town looks class on the map. Lovely place. Flowers and well maintained site. Clean, nice smelling shower block. They also had little tents on stilts that you could pay to stay in too. For cyclists they had a marque set up with BBQ and benches which was great also.
Got all my clothes washed with a liquid tab, smelled mmmmmm and had rails to hang them up overnight to dry. I like this place!
Back snug in my little tent tonight :-)
Class day in the end, after a bit of a rubbish start, mainly thanks to Andrea I think, you rule ;-)
